Whooping cough is a contagious disease caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium, spreading through droplets. The illness typically starts with coughing, which worsens over time leading to coughing fits where the patient struggles to breathe.
Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for infants, young children, pregnant women and newborns. In newborns it can lead to severe complications such as breathing difficulties or even pneumonia. For pregnant women the disease can be passed to the newborn right after birth. This is why a booster shot in the third trimester is highly recommended, as the antibodies will pass to the fetus providing protection for the newborn after birth.
At our clinic we offer PCR testing combined with a specialist consultation, which can detect the presence of the bacterium in the body. For children testing is carried out by our specialists in the pediatric clinic on the ground floor. If you or your child is experiencing respiratory symptoms feel free to contact us so we can accurately determine whether the infection is caused by a virus or bacterium.
Our patients, both children and adults can also come to us for the whooping cough vaccine. Vaccinations are always administered by the head of our vaccination center Dr. Zsolt Pintér.
