Prof. Katalin Darvas, M.D.

I am an anaesthesiology, intensive therapy and emergency medicine specialist. Since graduating from Semmelweis University, Budapest, I have been working at the 1st Department of Surgery where I reached the top of the career ladder and became the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy. I was promoted to professor in 1991 and currently I am a professor emerita. My specialty is the anaesthesia and perioperative treatment of minimally invasive and laparoscopic general and gynaecological surgeries. My educational activity includes teaching medical students, medical specialist candidates, students of Scientific Students’ Associations, PhD candidates, and vocational training of specialists.
During my career I followed the development of surgery and anaesthesiology/intensive therapy, thus I was present at the introduction of kidney and liver transplantation in Hungary and I saw laparoscopic techniques become general. I was involved in perioperative treatment of endocrine surgical patients and the intensive care of severely septic surgical patients.
At Maternity Private Clinic, it is a great joy to perform anaesthesia for surgeries after which – during successful pregnancy and delivery – we can meet the patients. The Clinic’s patient-centred attitude and collegial atmosphere is particularly pleasant.
I love my profession and, probably due to my father’s example, I can say I do it as a hobby. The biggest success for us is the recovery of a seriously ill patient in intensive care and I think that alleviating the pain of patients during and after surgery is one of the most beautiful jobs.
I spend my free time with my family of course, and besides that I enjoy music. I graduated from a music secondary school and it is still one of my favourite ways of spending my free time.
