Prof. Krisztina Kádár, M.D.

Following medical school, I first specialised in paediatrics, then my interest turned to paediatric cardiology, which became my second specialty. My first job was at the children’s hospital in Madarász street, then I started to work at the Hungarian Institute of Cardiology as a research fellow. Between 1977 and ‘78 I went on a field trip to England where I learned about paediatric cardiac ultrasound diagnostics which was in its infancy in Europe at that time, so I introduced this technique in Hungary. The examination of the fetal heart by ultrasound started in the beginning of the 1980s when I went to England again to learn the technique from Allen Lindsay, the best specialist in the field, who developed the technique. It was introduced in Hungary later on with my help.
In 1984-85 I went to see Professor Zoltán Papp to show the importance of fetal heart diagnostics and he gave me a huge support: we published the first paper on fetal arrhythmia together so when the Professor established Maternity, I joined him without hesitation.
The ultrasound diagnostics of children’s and fetal heart are close to me not just for personal reasons but also because it is a safe, non-invasive and painless method. At the Maternity Private Clinic I do cardiology examinations of newborns and children and I am always trying not to make mothers wait for too long for an examination. As a mother I know that worrying about a child is tough, so I am trying hard to give good news or solutions for everyone as soon as possible.
I like spending my free-time with my family the most. My husband, István Hartyánszki, is a cardiac surgeon, he performed the first heart transplant of a child in Hungary. My son , István Hartyánszki Jr., is the head of the Semmelweis University Heart and Vascular Centre. I have four beautiful grandchildren, time spent with them gives me the happiest moments. I also like gardening and, if I have time, I swim.
