BALÁZS SZEDLÁK, M.D.

Anesthetist-intensive care unit doctor

I was very interested in biology during my secondary school years, which is why I decided to be a surgeon. After I graduated from Semmelweis University, I got a position as a surgeon at the II. HIETE [Imre Haynal University of Health Sciences] Surgery Clinic. I later switched to my second favourite speciality: anaesthesiology and intensive therapy. The most significant achievement in my work is when the patient wakes up from anaesthesia with a smile, and it is evident that we have managed to maintain balance in her body throughout the surgery.

For me, reading is a source of relaxation. I really enjoy sci-fi, especially novels about utopias and parallel realities. I also love to listen to music and enjoy anything from jazz to rock. In addition to reading and listening to music, playing water polo is also an integral part of my life. I have been involved in sports since childhood, and even today, I still play on the veteran team. I am a team player at heart and this attitude relates to my everyday work as well, as I can work well with anyone.

It’s difficult to single out just one case or moment that I experienced as a doctor, as I have had numerous defining moments throughout my work. There were many difficult situations at the maternity clinic, but we made it out on top in all of them. For instance, during an ultrasound examination, a patient’s baby’s heart had stopped. We performed an emergency extraction within eight minutes, followed by half an hour of resuscitation. To everyone’s joy and relief, a completely healthy child was born. This will certainly remain an unforgettable memory for me.

I have three children and two grandchildren, so I prefer to devote my free time to them, but I also love reading, gardening, and hiking as well.
