GÉZA ABKAROVICS, M.D.

Obstetrician and gynecologist, urogynecologist

I graduated from Semmelweis University of Medicine in 1994, completed my specialist examination in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1999, and in anaesthesia and intensive care in 2006. I spent 13 years working in Budapest at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Péterfy Sándor Street Hospital.

Afterwards, I spent 5 years in Norway at the Stord Hospital, specializing in urogynaecology. It is here that I acquired specialised knowledge in the reconstruction of various types of gynaecological prolapses and about how to provide a treatment/solution to urinary incontinence.

In 2012, I applied for and was awarded the position of head of the urogynaecology department at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Bergen (Haukeland University Hospital, Norway). This university clinic also functions as the regional centre for oncology and obstetric pathology, where approximately 5,500 childbirths are conducted annually. Here, I had the opportunity to learn and master obstetric procedures that were no longer popular in other parts of Europe, such as breech delivery practices, managing the birth of twins, and the use of obstetrical forceps.

Teaching young doctors and providing further training to novice specialists were also important aspects of my clinical work.

In 2013, I signed a contracted with the also Norwegian Telemark Hospital, in order to master the methods of DaVinci robotic surgery. I also lead the urogynaecology department here, while obtaining my DaVinci robotic surgery license.

My special qualifications include the comprehensive examination of female urinary incontinence, and the conservative and surgical treatment thereof, as well as the management of various degrees and types of gynaecological prolapses, with a particular emphasis on solutions utilizing surgical meshes.

During my years abroad, I gained a high level of proficiency in laparoscopic surgical techniques.

In addition to that, I also possess a “B”-level qualification in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound, as well as IOTA (International Ovarian Tumour Analysis) license.

I am currently an active member of the following medical societies:

  • Norwegian Medical Chamber
  • Swedish Medical Chamber
  • Norwegian Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound in Medicine
  • AAGL (Advancing Minimally Invasive Gynaecology Worldwide
  • ICS (International Continence Society)
  • IUGA (International Urogynaecological Association)
  • Hungarian Medical Chamber
  • Hungarian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy
  • Hungarian Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Hungarian Menopause Society
  • Hungarian Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy

The many years spent in Scandinavia have reinforced and bolstered the perspective that I have always felt to be correct, namely, that the doctor and the patient are equal partners who work together towards a common goal, whether it be prenatal care, childbirth, treating illnesses or performing surgeries. I aim to pass on this approach to my younger colleagues as well.

In addition to my profession, my family are my greatest joy, that is, my wife, my two brave and courageous sons, my mother, my sibling, and their families. My extensive circle of friends, living all across the world, also plays a very important role in my life. My favourite sport is tennis. I speak Russian and Ukrainian at a native level, Norwegian at an advanced level, and Swedish and English at an intermediate level.
