I graduated from the University of Debrecen Medical School in 1978, after which I began my residency at the hospital in Miskolc, Borsod–Abaúj–Zemplén county. After a brief detour, I decided on the field of anaesthesia and intensive therapy.
This field was in its growing phase in Hungary at the time, so I had the opportunity to become part of the development of a profession. I had the privilege of getting to know some great leaders ahead of us, including Professor Darvas and Professor Miklós Tekeres, to name just a few. The lively professional life has led to friendships that last to this day.
I completed my specialist examination in 1983, and in 1988, I was tasked with establishing intensive care in the hospital. As department head starting 1994, my colleagues and I managed the hospital’s 25-man anaesthesia staff and a 12, later 24-bed intensive care unit. I handed over the leadership of the department in 2013, after which the establishment of emergency care became my main task. I have been working at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Clinic of Semmelweis University since 2017.
My love for anaesthesiology and intensive therapy has always been equal, as both required quick decision-making and long-term thinking. Close working relationships are formed with many other professions, and a lot of knowledge and inspiration comes from working together on various tasks.
I have been working at the anaesthesiology clinic of Maternity Clinic since 2019, drawing on the years of experience I have gained. For patients waiting on gynaecological surgeries and childbirth or C-sections, this is often the very last station, where in addition to preparations for surgery, the patients receive an answer to all their questions, and we try to assist them in solving their problems. All of this serves to reassure patients and enhance their sense of security.
Why do I like working at Maternity? Because after several decades in healthcare, this is finally a place and an atmosphere, where the patient really is at the centre of everything. In a calm environment, surrounded by a collegial atmosphere and always helpful colleagues, I am filled with the joy of a job well done after every appointment.
