In the last weeks of pregnancy, expectant mothers’ thoughts revolve almost entirely around the upcoming birth. We’ve compiled the most important things to pack in the hospital bag so that everything is ready when the newest member of the family arrives.

For the postpartum package, include:

  • passport or identity card, resident card, address card and TAJ card (Hungarian social
  • security card – if you have one)
  • for the baby’s birth certificate registration: a marriage certificate in Hungarian language issued within 1 year, or an OFFI translation of the original marriage certificate along with a printed certification from the embassy
  • all medical reports and test results obtained during prenatal care
  • pregnancy booklet (please check if the general paediatrician’s email contact details are
  • recorded in the booklet)
  • vanity bag, toiletries
  • comfortable slippers
  • underwear (cotton underwear that will hold the pad) or disposable “paper panties”, a bra and breast pads (if needed)
  • postpartum pads (also provided in our clinic)
  • a breast pump if needed (also available from our clinic)
  • Pajamas and slippers for the father
  • the outfit you wish to take your newborn home in
  • infant car seat
  • for C-section: thigh-high compression stockings (also available from our clinic)

Our clinic provides the following:

  • Towels
  • Bath robe and textile slippers
  • Nightgown for the mother
  • Cutlery and a cup
  • Five meals a day for 2 people
  • Breast pump upon request
  • Diapers and baby care products
  • Clothes for the baby during the stay
  • Baby monitor
  • Nursing pillow

If you’re preparing for a natural birth, it’s worth packing separately for the delivery room and the postpartum period. The mother can bring a smaller, easily portable bag to the delivery room with items that may help during labor.

This bag could include:

  • Water with a sports cap or bottle, isotonic drink, filtered apple juice
  • Glucose tablets, small fruit puree packets, chocolate (easily meltable, not in pieces, no granola bars)
  • Bathing suit top or sports bra for laboring in water, if desired
  • Snacks, drinks, water for the father
  • Essential oils, perineal massage oil for labor, childbirth, and postpartum
  • Gynotal gel to ease childbirth, if needed
  • Large cotton underwear or Tena panties, or even diaper-style underwear
  • Phone charger
  • Personal labor playlist
  • Postpartum absorbent pads
